Zara Adcock Poetry

Three Poems by Zara Adcock

Two Souls

In the hours of a lonely night,
Two souls lie wide awake,
The young girl wonders about boys and kisses,
The older woman reminisces.

Translations

Can you translate that state of serenity, from what you see with your eyes?
Can you translate a bird’s sweet song, or the magical way it flies?
Can you translate a ballerina’s, lonely dance in the corridors, of a closed theatre
without music to be guided by…

Can you translate a grown cat’s stillness, or the knowing in her expression?
Or a butterfly’s tiny wing beats, throughout the sun-setting procession,
Can you translate a child’s humming in the shower, into a song you recognise?
When the melody, and harmony, seem to be spiralling from the skies,

Science fails you now, when you watch daily wonders and unknowns,
Your baby girl used to scream all night, and now she’s writing poems,
Whispering words to herself, and spinning threads with a sharpened pencil,
She weaves a song of a writer, a translation of her own.

Earth Beyond

Every day I sit up in bed
And greet the earth beyond.
Every night I lie down in bed
And listen to Earth respond.
